Arriving to Helsinki from the airport

If you’ve just landed in Helsinki, the easiest way to start your journey is by taking the local train I or P from the airport train station. Remember to purchase a train ticket at the platform, as tickets are not sold on the train. You’ll need to buy an ABC ticket, as the airport is located on the C zone, and the train passes through the B zone on its way to the city center. You can ask the airport staff on and around the platform for help. The ride to town doesn’t take much time. You can track your journey on the monitors on the train, or listen to announcements. The train ticket costs 4,60 euros from the ticket vending machine.

You can also take the taxi straight to us. There’s a few options, ranging from approximately 30 euros to 55 euros, but as taxi prices in Finland can be metered or negotiated with the driver, the price may vary. Show our address to the driver, and they’ll know where to take you.

Finally, you can take the bus from the airport to the Central Railway Station, as well. The local buses 615 leaves from across the long-distance bus platforms outside Terminal 2. The name of the stop is Lentoasema (V5330). The ride takes about an hour and costs 6,50 euros from the driver. You’ll need the ABC ticket, as the bus passes through all three zones.

From the Central Railroad Station station to Both

You have a few options on how to get to Both from the train station. Here’s a breakdown.

1. By foot

If you arrive by the P train, you’ll be on the opposite side of the station, so as you get off the train, first walk straight in along the platform and under the glass ceiling. Don’t enter the station building. Instead, take a turn to the right, past the departing trains, and through a walkway straight ahead of you into the open. You’ve now reached the Eliel square.

If you arrive by the I train, all you have to do is walk straight from the platform and out into the open where you’ll see a local bus platform. If you’re at the front of the train, this walk is about 10 meters. You’re now at the Eliel square.

If you got to the center by bus, you’ll be dropped off at the Eliel square.

From the Eliel square, walk the Postikatu road between the Sokos hotel & department store block and the tall building with a post office and a K-Supermarket grocery store, approx. 20 meters. You’ll come to a large intersection with the Kiasma museum of contemporary art to your right (you’ll also recognize it by the Mannerheim statue, a man on a horse, next to it). Walk toward Kiasma, and cross the road in front of it to Arkadiankatu. This is the road on the left side of the small park, between two buildings. You’ll know you’re on the right road if it has tram tracks.

Keep walking straight until you come to the first large intersection and what looks like an underpass. Don’t worry – all you need to do is follow the tram tracks across the intersection, over the underpass. You’ll come to the Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu. Don’t follow the tram tracks any further. Instead, turn to the left, and keep walking alongside the underpass between two roads – however, do not descend down there. The underpass is a bike and pedestrian road called Baana.

Keep walking straight. You’ll have to cross the road once.

In the second intersection, cross the road to a small plaza. Cross the plaza to Hietaniemenkatu at the roundabout (not the road in the middle of the plaza, but the 2nd one to the right.) Keep walking down the road, admire the colorful apartment buildings, and keep the left side. At the end of the street you’ll find Both. Good job! You made it!

2. By tram

20 meters. You’ll come to a large intersection. Cross the road to your left and you’ll come in front of the Sokos department store. Get to the tram stop in the middle of the road and stay on the first platform (the one on the same side as Sokos). The name of the stop is Lasipalatsi. If your ticket is still valid, you don’t need a new one. If 80 minutes have already passed since you purchased it, your ticket has expired, and you need a new one, however this time you can buy the AB ticket instead.

Take the tram number 1 or 2. Get off at the Kauppakorkeakoulut stop (the 2nd stop from where you got on).

Cross the road to the opposite side from the tram stop, then again to your right to get across the large intersection. You’ll find yourself in the corner of Hanken (the Swedish business school). Rather than taking the large road (Runeberginkatu) down, go straight past Hanken and then take the small road behind it to the left. Keep walking straight down on Lapuankatu until it ends, and turn to the right. Both is located right in front of you!

3. By metro

If you arrive by the P train or the I train, all you have to do is walk straight from the platform into the station building. Just follow the train tracks into the station area, then get inside the building. Walk straight through the hall, and take the escalator in the middle of it down.

If you got to the center by bus, you’ll be dropped off at the Eliel square. Get inside the large station building from the many old wooden doors under a sign that reads “Rautetieasema”, then follow the hall until about halfway through it. Turn to the right, and take the escalator in the middle of the hall down.

Once you’re underground, follow the “M” signs to the metro in B3 (you’ll have to take the escalator once more to the station plaza, then the long escalator down to the platform.) Make sure you have a valid ticket before entering the platform in B3. If 80 minutes have passed since you purchased your ticket, you’ll need to get a new one. However this time you can get just the AB ticket.

Take the metro towards Matinkylä. You’ll be getting off in Kamppi, which is the next stop.

At Kamppi, follow the platform towards the end that says Runeberginkatu. Ride the long escalator up, and exit the station to your right. You’ll exit the station in front of several bus platforms. Walk to the street to the left and you’ll come to a roundabout. Cross the street to get to the K-Market grocery store, and keep walking straight along Runeberginkatu. Cross the street a total of three times very close to each other, first to get past some buses, then across an underpass bike road. Stop when you reach another roundabout.

At the roundabout, cross to the left to Hietaniemenkatu, then keep walking straight down the road. Admire the colorful apartment buildings along the way, and keep the left side. At the end of the street you’ll find Both. Good job! You made it!
